Welcome to Nourished Root

SEPTEMBER

DISCERN & BRING BALANCE

By now, we are likely burned out after moving this outward energy of Fire, expansion, doing, responsibility, for too long.

The leaves are starting to release their dry and brittle leaves, and Nature is showing us that it is time for us to do the same.

In this time of transition, we are invited to release some of our responsibilities, cut back on all the doing, draw some of that outward energy back in and nourish our deeper reserves of energy, immunity, chi -- our roots.

The plants die back and pull their chi into the soil as well. Fall is a time to descend and journey down.

We transition from "doing" to "being" and bring in sensuality, relaxation, herbs for the nervous system, healing water rituals, among other practices.

The Fall is connected to:

✦ the direction: West

✦ the element: Water

✦ the archetype of the Wise Woman

✦ the Waning Moon

✦ and the afternoon, sunset and evening hours

September's theme is DISCERN.

The Wise Woman knows how to use her energy wisely. She does not overcommit, or say yes to everything and then burn out. When she is asked to do something, she smiles, pauses and replies “Let me think about it” or “Let me get back to you” or “I am sorry, I won't be able to do that right now” or “No.”

The Fall Equinox is about BALANCE.

The balance of light and dark, day and night. The balance of releasing the old, and bringing in the new. Our Equinox ritual will assist us in doing both.

This is a time of renewal.

This is a time to reflect on how you are cultivating balance in your life.

What changes do you need to make to enjoy greater balance?

What needs to be released?

What needs to be called in?

Spend some time journaling about this, getting clarity and connecting to your heart’s guidance.

Make: Elder Immunity Cordial

This cordial is a go to when you want to keep sickness at bay. It is also delicious. You can dilute an ounce (28 ml) in a hot herbal tea or in warm water with a lemon wedge and a spoonful of honey and sip for a strong dose of protection.

Yield: 1 quart (946 ml)

  • 2 cups dried elderflowers

  • 2 cups dried elderberries

  • 3-inch chunk peeled and diced fresh ginger root

  • Fresh orange rind

  • 1/2 cup dried angelica root (optional)

  • 1/2 cup dried echinacea root (optional)

  • Sprig fresh thyme (optional)

  • Brandy, to taste

  • 1 cup honey (optional)

  1. Place dried ingredients in a quart-size mason jar. Top off with brandy.

  2. Add honey, if using.

  3. Serve 3 tablespoons in 3 ounces hot water and servce.

What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.”
